When you're a senior in college, you're really not trying to think about much of anything. I can attest to it! We have graduation to worry about, along with all the homework, and trying to go out....so the last thing on your mind is what you have to wear on class days. Just because I'm a fashion major doesn't mean that I'm serving looks 24/7. I most certainly DON'T on most days. And it's cold on top of all that?? Seems daunting, but looking sort of put together in the wintertime is possible. With the help of my friend Kelsie and her photography skills (feel free to give her a follow and check out her other work) , I'm going to show you how to jazz up your look without trying too hard while staying cozy!
LOOK 1: SWEATSHIRT + LEGGINGS + CUTE SNEAKERS
When I was in high school I was always saying I would never wear leggings to school...a few years later, I'm almost never wearing anything else! I love lying! Leggings are crucial for college and while some people may consider them to be a shortcut, sometimes you can't be bothered to zip up pants when you're running late to a 9 AM lecture and you still haven't had coffee yet.
If you need to shop for leggings I recommend that you make sure that the material isn't transparent and that they have good colorfastness (meaning that they stay black no matter how many washes they go through). Another thing I suggest is that you try to shop for them when there's a sale on buying more than one pair. I love these from Garage because they last forever and are so easy to run around campus in. They also generally have them marked buy one get one half off, so stocking up is easy on your wallet.
Whenever I wear black leggings, I just think that that the least I could do to stand out is wear a bright color or have a slogan on my shirt. Slogan tees are usually a fun way to show your personality but since it's cold I'd opt for something with long sleeves. I like this sweatshirt from the Harry Styles tour (even though I didn't go-my best friend Kyle did on my behalf) because I like the sneaky placement of the lyrics on the sleeve.and it's bright! I don't have a link to this exact sweatshirt but you love Harry as much as everyone else with taste does, you can pick another one here. If you're not a Harry stan, any bright top will do the trick.
Another thing you can do to up the ante a little is to wear cool shoes. Dad sneakers or anything chunky/brightly colored are shoes that you can walk around in all day if you're going from class to class. This pair from adidas are dope because of the bright orange backing. It matches with the yellow sweatshirt just fine but really, the splash orange is worth wearing every day so long the rest of your outfit is pretty neutral.
LOOK #2: PLAIN PINK TEE
Rather than a plain white t shirt for the second look I decided to pick a more exciting color. White t shirts are essential but having other solid tees breaks the cycle of wearing just white. Pink is pretty much considered a neutral since it's super trendy right now and I wore this one from Project Social T. They make the comfiest t shirts I think I've ever come across. I paired it with this denim jacket from Free People as another layer to keep myself warm in the library. Some rooms at school are too warm so a t shirt and a jacket is good to have so you can take it on and off.
The pink shoes coordinate with the pink top but you don't always have to match them that way if you don't want to. These are another pair of adidas. The Campus style is so comfy to walk around in.
The black jeans break up the two pink colors and make the outfit not so bright. Denim in general is great and durable. My rule of thumb is that the darker the jeans (black or blue), the more put together you'll look compared to wearing leggings. The ones from AE are bomb and easy to break in.
Another thing I want to add is if you ever feel like your outfit is still too plain....you can never go wrong with a good set of hoops! If you don't have your ears pierced then try a chain or pendant to jazz up your school look. Simple jewelry is a great way to show your personality rather than relying on the clothes to do it all for you. Fast fashion retailers have a variety of jewelry to pick from if you're a little weary about wearing real gold at school. I'm allergic to anything that's not at least gold plated, so my go-to pairs of earrings are the ones I'm wearing from Dogeared.
LOOK #3: WINTER BOOTS
I've been living in Illinois my entire life and every time it snows I still get mad that I can't just slide on a pair of Vans and trot along to class. I mean, I could, but I try not to because I don't want to slip and fall on my butt.
When it comes down to buying a winter boot you can go for a traditional lace up bootie, or Uggs, or whatever you see fit. I like these rain boots from Jeffery Campbell mostly because of the platform lugged sole. Lugged soles are good to have on the bottom of your boots so there's some tread to them. It makes the risk of slipping go down significantly compared to a flat sole shoe (like Vans, flats, or the adidas I'm wearing above).
Looking for boots with a fur or fleece lining is ideal for negative degree temperatures. Since mine don't have a lining I wear these with a thicker sock. I also like to wear these grungier boots with these super girly socks. Any plain boot will instantly be livened up by winter socks. I just love the pearls on these because they add a feminine flair to whatever it is I want to wear.
Since the boots are black you can really wear them with anything you want! But lately I've been loving a good flannel to throw on top of a plain shirt or cami. Flannels are definitely more relaxed so when you have quick study date you can leave it open and be on your way. I don't have a link to this one specifically because it was thrifted, but Urban Outfitters makes nice ones too!
Once we got outside, I topped this off with a leather jacket to give my outfit that grunge vibe I tend to lean towards. This one has a super cozy and a detachable hood so I can leave the hood on if it starts to rain or take it off if it stays clear outside. Any kind of outwear with super cute boots and socks is like the cherry on top for a winter outfit.
And there you have it! Dressing for winter doesn't mean you need to be all covered up with a boring bubble coat and call it a day. There's a way to show your style and not freeze to death while doing it. I tried to include links to most things, and if I couldn't find the exact item I tried to put somewhere where you can find something similar. Hopefully this will help hold you over until it gets warm again.
Thanks for reading, and I'll see you on the next post!
