Hello everyone! Welcome to my fashion blog! It's been a long time comin'. I mean, a long LONG time. I'm only 23 and yet I feel like I'm late to the game and running out of time. But I've always thought about making a blog, I've just been too scared to pull the trigger up until now. No time like the present!
This summer I'll be graduating with a BA in Merchandising and Design. I already have an online portfolio with my school projects and freelance styling (you can take a peek here if you'd like) but I've always wanted another outlet to express my creative ideas. My dream in life is to be a stylist, so I think blogging would be good practice in assembling looks and creative direction.
Since I don't have any styling content (yet), I thought it would be a good First Post™️ to answer some fashion-related questions so you can get to know me and what I'm all about.
Q1. Where are you from?
Bloomington, Illinois
Q2. Where do you like to shop?
If I'm shopping online I mostly go on ASOS or Missguided. The mall here is a ghost town but if I bother to go I'll go to Express or American Eagle. I also try to thrift here and there. Majority of my clothes comes from the department store I work at. We love an employee discount and being frugal!
Q3. What's your body type?
I'm 5 ft 1, with long legs and a short torso and I would consider my body type to lean more towards an hourglass figure. If I'm not shopping in petite sections I generally wear a XS or S, but it depends on the brand because everyone's sizing is different. I'll always try to state what size I'm wearing as a visual reference, and also include options for styling other body types as well.
Q4. What does fashion mean to you?
A: To me fashion is EVERYTHING- I truly don't know what else I would be doing with my life if pursuing what I love wasn't possible. It's a great form of self expression and a lucrative field that'll be strong in the future. Fashion is a business, a hobby, a creative outlet...everything!
Q5. What's a big issue in fashion right now that you're passionate about?
A: Diversity will always be something I want to push for in regards to any creative industry because it's still a huge problem. I'm a Black woman from the Midwest. Not only is there not a whole lot of black female fashion professionals in general, but there's barely any visibility for us. Fashion is still very much a boy's club, and the women involved are primarily white. I hope by being creative and connecting with other fashion enthusiasts of all kinds I would be helping in paving the way for any marginalized group to be in the fashion industry and finding new POC to support.
Q6. Who are your favorite designers?
Alexander McQueen, Thierry Mugler, Self Portrait, Marc Jacobs, Jeremy Scott, Christian Siriano, Rebecca Minkoff....I'm a Libra so it's hard for me to pick favorites.
Q7. Favorite trend?
At the moment I'm really digging the Western kind of vibe-fringe, denim, those belts with the ornate buckles. And you can always find me in something plaid.
Q8. What are your favorite pieces to style with?
In general I think adding accessories really amps up any look even if it's casual. I'm a sucker for a good gold hoop or a funky handbag. Aside from accessories, patterned or colored pants can jazz up an outfit without even trying. Shoes are also fun to play with if you want to elevate whatever you're wearing.
Q9. What else do you like besides fashion?
I've always loved pop culture so I love watching TV shows and movies along with keeping up to date on celeb gossip. I'm a huge music fan so I try to go to as many concerts as time allows me to. Some of my other interests include astrology, beauty and cooking.
That's just a little bit about me! I hope these things help you guys in knowing who I am and what my style is like.
Do you also love McQueen? Excited for Fashion Week this year? Any suggestions about posts? Feel free to hit me back with a comment. Let's chat!
Until next time!
